On the way back we decided that rather than retrace our steps we would go down the Stewart-Cassiar highway that runs parallel to tbe B.C. coast. The first half of this road is actually in the worst condition of any road we had been on to that point with potholes and uneven surfaces.

It is also not paved for several sections - and since we are now far enough south that the road is no longer covered in snow.

Linus found this insect cocoon underneath a rock.

Towards the southern end of the highway there is a turn that leads down to the coastal town of Stewart.

The road goes through some extremely unstable mountains - avalaunch areas everywhere. We stopped (briefly) to look at some of the spots and you can hear the constant trickle of rocks rolling down.

There is evidence everywhere of why you don't want to be stopping here.

The town of Stewart - not much going on here in winter.

The board walk leads out of the town towards the ocean.

The is Canada's most northerly ice free port. However, it doesn't seem to be used for anything much except logging and a bit of fishing - probably because it so hard to get to (no rail access). So Prince Rupert further south is the main northern port.

The town is a tourist centre in summer but other than film crews there was nothing in winter. 'The Thing' was filmed here and 'Antarctica' was being filmed whilst we were here - the nearby glaciers are the main reason Hollywood likes the location I think.

The border to the US is just beyond Stewart and the village of Hyder is only accessible from Canada. Bizarely there is no US border post but there is a Canada customs. In true Canadian style the border post's entire purpose is to stop Candians in Stewart from poping over the border to buy cheap alcohol in Alaska! He didn't care about us going through without passports but stopped us on the way back to ensure we hadn't got any extra alcohol (or bear spray...).

Hyder has a small fishing dock that you can drive out to.

Out on the dock, there were several eagles to be seen in the sky and this one on some old wood. Shame the weather was so grey and misty otherwise this could have been a really good picture.

I went back to the car to get the 500mm mirror (which behaves like a 800mm lens on the 20D). Although this is a cheap 20+ year old mirror with a M42-EOS adaptor, it still gets you pictures that you can't get any other way.

The mosquitoes were already in evidence at this location - they sound like they are horrendous in summer - another big advantage of coming at this time of year.
