Despite the freezing temperatures Linus was still having fun playing in the snow.

To emphasise again, -28C was the highest temperature we saw for 1.5 days we were there.

That night we stayed up until after midnight and then drove a few km down the ice road to look for the Aurora. We were not dissapointed.

I took a whole mass of pictures, of which these are the best. They need a bit of work in
an editing program to brighten them up, but for now, this is how they came out of the camera.

It depends quite heavily on your monitor whether you can make out the details in this. I have a triple headed machine and on one monitor this looks really good - you can make out the car and lots of detail in the dark areas - on the other monitor it is all black except for a green stripe in the sky.

The Aurora bands wander arround in the sky and at times there was hardly anything to see and at others the sky seemed full of it.

I tried a whole mass of exposures ranging from ~1sec to 30sec (I hadn't got the absurdly
expensive electronic cable release for the camera on this trip so couldn't use the 'bulb'
setting - cable releases used to cost $5, now they are $150...)

The main problem was the cold when taking the pictures. I had to have my hands out of my gloves to operate the camera and at -30C that quickly results in fingers that don't work any more. Ontop of that my tripod is out of aluminium and so was almost impossible to hold to get the legs the right length. I ended up with a quite badly 'burnt' finger from touching the metal.

These next two would have been quite good, except for the appalling fault in the camera
(which is documented on several other websites but this was the first time I had run into it).
At high ISO with long exposures and the internal flash you get this wierd banding.

Pretty abysmal performance for a $1500 camera!

However, with the flash off, I got quite a few nice ones. The camera amzingly kept going
for the whole 20-30 minutes - the LCD was starting to take about 20sec to change the setting
display at the end but the pictures were still coming off OK.
