The next morning, after loading back up, we had the first sign of car trouble when the engine didn't really turn over very fast even though it was 'only' -15C. As usual, when it is cold a giant cloud of black smoke comes out of the back when it starts (I missed the worst of it in this picture as I had to grab the camera and run round to the back after starting it - the black smoke only lasts a few seconds before it goes back to being just water vapour.)

The day, however was beautifully clear, perfect for the most spectacular part of the drive.

The section of raod from Eagle Plains to Fort McPhearson is the section that needs the most work in winter to keep it open - mainly because it is so exposed so drifting snow is a big problem. The hints of this were that this was the first time we had seen the road surface due to the snow having been blown off.
