On the appraoch to Eagle Plains the next mountain range could be seen on the horizon - getting across this range would be the main task for the next day.

This is basically just a truck stop with some rooms added to make a basic hotel. However it is essential during the winter unless you want to be driving in the dark. For pick ups and SUVs with small fuel tanks and their excessively large engines it is also essential as they are arriving here with empty tanks after the 370km since the last filling station. We topped up here as well in order to keep the tank full. For the first time in a long time I was asked whether I really wanted to be putting diesel in my tank - suggesting there aren't too many Tdi's up here... (I used to get asked this all the time in Hawaii but Canadians seem to be used to the idea of a diesel car so it hardly happens now) The car you see in this picture was the only other car (as opposed to pickup or truck) we saw the entire day.

Most of the activity here is either oil rig related or just heavy trucks passing through.

The view out over the surrounding plains definately gave the impression of being a long way north in a very barren place.

In the evening we sat arround in the lobby and had a very interesting conversation with this local (from Old Crow) who was working on a nearby oil rig (seaching for oil - they haven't found any yet). That water bottle he has is not filled with water by the way...
